Air conditioners have allowed us to stay comfortable in homes in ways thought impossible in generations past. It’s something that shouldn’t be taken for granted, given that air cooling can protect against heat in an artificial climate-controlled indoor environment. Many air conditioners built today run off little energy, which is advantageous for the environment.
Any machine that uses large amounts of power requires a good deal of energy. It entails the burning of fossil fuels. The more people using energy, the more fossil fuels are burned. The result produces an excessive amount of carbon dioxide in the air. However, advances abound in new appliances, including air conditioning cooling. Some are innovating machines yet aren’t well known to the general public.
Although evaporative coolers are essentially air conditioners, distinctions are present through their implementation of turning warm air to cool air. These units achieve this through evaporative cooling, the process of natural heat to transform water into water vapour.
Our bodies naturally do this when the sweat glands produce sweat, cooling us down to get rid of excessive amounts of heat. Evaporative cooling units work the same way, though in mechanical form.
When an evaporative air cooling runs, outdoor air sucks into a vent and percolates through a dampened pad. The pad requires water for it to remain in its damp state. The air passing through it is humidified and cooler. Some evaporative coolers are portable, needing no installation at all.
These units contain fans and work well in single rooms or small studio spaces. Larger units are installed, sometimes on the roof of a building. As they produce humidity, evaporative coolers are better suited for hot and dry climates or as an alternative to an AC during seasonal dry spells. They can run off half the standard amount of energy required to keep a refrigerant-based AC operating.
Room-Specific AC Cooling
Another option is zoned AC cooling, where individual rooms are cooled instead of entire living spaces.
As you can imagine, the savings possibilities from this are enormous. With a ducted system, all indoor spaces feel the same since the ducts travel to every room. But with zoned cooling, better control is provided to the user, sometimes without the need of a thermostat. Zoned ACs could also have an extended warranty as less energy is needed.
Zoned systems operate using either split ducted systems without vents or a damper for centralized ducts. The former requires the installation of an indoor vent typically mounted on a wall close to a window. The latter is inside the vents. Both are controllable by either a thermostat or through the occupant of each room. Some zoned setups are home-ready, a configuration that connects WiFi-compatible electronics.

There’s no denying that staying cool requires energy to be used. But with the right tools, you can manage this and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
